The mathematics curriculum at Phoenix Academy is designed to build a solid foundation in essential mathematical concepts throughout primary education, helping students progress seamlessly from basic to advanced skills. It uses a spiral learning approach where core topics are revisited and expanded over the years, reinforcing earlier learning as new, more challenging ideas are introduced.

Emphasising practical application, the curriculum helps students see mathematics as a relevant part of their everyday lives. Early concepts like "Money and Time" evolved into applying measurement to real-world scenarios in later years, fostering a sense of mathematics as a valuable skill. Diverse forms of representation complement this practical approach—from number lines to data tables—that deepens students' understanding and flexibility in interpreting mathematical ideas.

Problem-solving and reasoning are embedded throughout the curriculum, developing critical thinking skills as students learn to tackle increasingly complex problems. By Year 4 and Year 5, they engage with sophisticated challenges involving fractions, decimals, and multi-step calculations. Fluency in number operations is prioritised, beginning with counting and basic arithmetic in Year 1, advancing to formal methods and mental arithmetic by Year 5.

Each year group has specific focus areas: Year 1 lays the groundwork with basic counting and shape recognition, while Year 2 expands into place value and measures. Year 3 introduces fractions and data comparison. By Year 6, students handle algebra, sequences, and advanced geometry, preparing them thoroughly for secondary school.

To make learning engaging, the curriculum encourages diverse applications of mathematics, enhancing both enjoyment and confidence. It also incorporates a range of mathematical strands—number, geometry, measurement, data handling, and early algebra—ensuring comprehensive coverage and fluency. Formative and summative assessments are used to monitor progress, with differentiated activities to meet all learners' needs.

Ultimately, the curriculum’s goal is to foster a love of mathematics, making it accessible and relevant, and to build confidence in problem-solving. This ensures that students leave primary education well-prepared for secondary school and beyond, equipped with essential skills and a positive mindset toward mathematics.
