History
At Phoenix Academy, our History curriculum is designed to ignite a passion for learning about the past. It equips pupils with the knowledge and understanding to appreciate the influence of historical events on the modern world. Through a carefully structured programme, we seek to develop a sense of identity and awareness of Britain's cultural heritage while fostering an understanding of global history.
Our curriculum supports pupils in developing a chronological framework from the Early Years Foundation Stage through Year 6. Children are encouraged to consider the impact of historical changes on societies and individuals by studying pivotal periods and events in British and world history. Pupils learn to appreciate themes such as leadership, social justice, and innovation, which are interwoven throughout their historical studies.
Critical thinking is at the heart of our History curriculum. Pupils are taught to engage with various sources, evaluate different perspectives, and develop their ability to argue and reason. These skills support their understanding of history and empower them to become informed and active citizens. The curriculum also promotes a sense of British values, emphasising democracy, tolerance, and the rule of law, demonstrating their relevance both in the past and today.
Our integrated approach includes cross-curricular links to literacy, geography, and PSHE, enhancing pupils' ability to see history's relevance in other learning areas. Local history is also a key element, allowing pupils to connect with and take pride in their community's history.
