DT
At Phoenix Academy, we recognise the essential role that Design and Technology (D&T) plays in developing pupils' creativity and practical abilities. Our curriculum is designed to provide pupils with the opportunity to explore and understand the designed world around them while equipping them with the necessary skills to create purposeful, functional, and aesthetic products.
Through a progressive curriculum, we ensure that pupils engage with key design and technology principles, including the selection and use of materials, tools, and techniques. Our hands-on approach to learning encourages pupils to take risks, experiment, and refine their ideas while considering the wider impact of their designs on society, the environment, and the economy. D&T at Phoenix promotes critical thinking and innovation, preparing pupils for future challenges in a fast-evolving technological landscape.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children start by exploring materials and developing their fine motor skills through construction and design activities. As they move through Key Stages 1 and 2, they learn to apply design criteria, create prototypes, and evaluate their work based on set objectives. By Year 6, pupils are capable of independently designing and producing complex projects, demonstrating a clear understanding of the relationship between form, function, and audience needs.
Our curriculum draws strong links with other subjects, including science, maths, and art, ensuring a well-rounded education that promotes the practical application of knowledge. At Phoenix, our D&T programme is rooted in fostering innovation, technical proficiency, and a love for design, enabling our pupils to make meaningful contributions to the modern world.
