Early Years


At Phoenix Academy, we strongly believe in capturing the children’s imagination. We provide a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum that meets the needs of each individual child.

Play underpins learning in our nursery and we extend and develop the children’s learning through carefully planned experiences to enable them to develop an understanding of themselves and the world around them. A safe and caring environment ensures that the children grow in self-esteem and fulfil their potential.

Carefully planned indoor and outdoor provision using the Early Years Foundation Stage guidance (www.foundationyears.org.uk) encourages children to extend their development through first-hand experience in a wide range of situations. Communication and interaction between adults and children plays a vital role in these experiences.

Children follow a programme of work planned from the Early Years Foundation Stage. This encompasses seven areas of learning which are:

  • Communication and language;
  • Physical development;
  • Personal, social and emotional development;
  • Literacy;
  • Mathematics;
  • Understanding the world;
  • Expressive arts and design.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standards to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. It promotes teaching and learning to ensure children’s ‘school readiness’ and gives children the broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future progress through school/academy and life.



Children in our Reception classes have a combination of child initiated learning and adult led learning. A thematic teaching approach allows for links in learning to be made and skills and knowledge to be taught in context. We strongly believe in teaching topics which will inspire and motivate the children’s learning; such as dinosaurs, princesses and princes, pirates.

A daily systematic phonics programme Read Write Ink  is taught to ensure children acquire the letters and sounds knowledge needed for them to become emergent readers and writers.

Discrete mathematics sessions are taught in a practical way to enable children with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare them for the National Curriculum.

At Phoenix Academy we work hard to ensure the transition from Nursery to Reception and Reception to Year One is a smooth one. We work closely with parents/carers and strongly advocate an academy/home partnership, allowing for the children to reach their full potential.

At the end of Reception we report on the children’s progress against their age expected development.
